Job stress results when we work too much or under bad circumstances, and it’s not news to anyone that such stress can make us sick. But there’s a wrinkle that flies under the radar in the stress and health discussion: Not only can an excessively stressful career make us sick, but once we get sick, our lower energy levels affect the quality and quantity of the work we can do, and sooner or later, our impaired performance can in turn ruin our careers.
Unfortunately, excess stress on a daily basis is something all too familiar to lots of people. And for all too many, it has already resulted in an assortment of health problems, ranging from the merely annoying, embarrassing, and slightly painful, such as cold sores, acne, neck pain, headaches, and hair loss, all the way to obesity, heart attacks, and even death.
Sometimes things can get so bad, that karoshi may seem like a merciful way out. But let’s focus on the kinds of health consequences that result from stress that doesn’t quite kill you and on the impact they can have on your career in turn. If the stress is ongoing, and it usually is, you may well end up suffering for years, alive but not so well.
We know that when the body experiences stress, it releases adrenalin and cortisol as part of our primitive fight-or-flight response. These important hormones help increase the oxygen level in the blood and boost the sugar in the blood - preparing us to either flee or fight.
That reaction may have been useful in an era where fighting or fleeing would have been considered reasonable options. But if your boss is yelling at you, neither bonking him on the kisser nor running away screaming qualifies as appropriate behavior. Instead, there you are, a sitting duck, flooded with stress hormones that have no place to go and serve no purpose except wreak havoc on your well-being.
What havoc? For example, the immune system is suppressed or damaged, which compromises your body’s ability to resist infection. So you’re the first to catch the office cold and the last to recover from it. And then there are a number of chronic health conditions are either caused or made worse by stress, including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, migraine headaches, and heart disease. Some research suggests that stress can even cause cancer - or push the body over that critical hurdle where our immune system is just no longer strong enough to fight it off.
There are also slightly less obvious conditions, less obvious at least to the outside observer: depression, fibromyalgia, insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and adrenal burnout.
They all have in common that they’ll sap your energy and make it very difficult to get much work done. Come performance review, you’ll have some explaining to do. And if anything, that’ll make your stress-levels even worse.
Can you see where this is heading? Stress may hurt your body, but it will also hurt your career if you don’t manage to get on top of it. The ONET Occupational Database - The Best Job Descriptions on the Internet

The ONET Occupational Database
The information I will describe below was developed by United States Government agencies including but not limited to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The ONET database is a treasure trove of occupational data and is the largest of its kind.
At the heart of the process is a concept called the ONET Content Model. Go to www.onetonline.org to read along. It will be helpful for your career search to be acquainted with the job titles that the leading occupational source identifies as related occupations.
How They Do It
In order for the ONET database to provide what I call the ‘transition trees’ for every occupation, they needed to develop a codification and classification system that they call the SOC taxonomy. SOC stands for Standard Occupational Classification and the taxonomy is a group of standardized characteristics they use to develop job profiles in hundreds of occupations. The taxonomy includes 812 occupational classifications/profiles today.
Why It is Important for You
The ONET database is the only database that combines and relates occupational classifications with Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.(KSA’s). It is the KSA library of characteristics that make up the backbone of every occupational profile. Each worker possess a unique set of knowledge, skills, and abilities – but you also share commonalities among and between many other occupational profiles. These are referred to as the ‘related occupations’ that are discussed and analyzed below.
The SOC Taxonomy
Here is an example of how the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) taxonomy model works. The SOC was developed by the Department of labor to classify the entire population of occupations. Occupations that share knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics are grouped within the same SOC family. Most of the occupations titles are strongly related, but sometimes titles you might think are related are not. I tested this theory on two titles that I assumed would be related, but found out otherwise.
I have known several computer programmers and many technical people who are also amateur musicians. I’ve read that the reason is that programmers and musicians share a love of mathematics and patterns. To test that theory I analyzed the ONET taxonomy to see how closely Computer Programmers and Musicians were related.
Computer Programmers are categorized under SOC 15.
Musicians are classified under SOC 27.
A search for ‘Computer Programmer’ returned 504 occupations sorted by relevancy.
Music Directors and Music Teachers had a relevance score of 1 out of 100. This is the lowest score.
Mathematical science teachers also had a relevance of 1 out of 100.
According to the experts at ONET, there is a weak link between computer programmers and musicians on the ONET Relevancy scale.
Next, I followed the daisy chain of ‘related occupations’. Here is what I found:
Level 1. Computer Programmer (SOC 15) is related to Computer Operator (SOC 43)
Level 2. Computer Operator is related to Desktop Publisher (SOC 43)
Level 3: Desktop Publisher is related to Film and Video Editors (SOC 27)
Level 4: Film and Video Editors is related to Fine Artists, Including Painters, Sculptors, and Illustrators (SOC 27)
I searched on the Musician Occupation and found this:
Level 1: Musician (instrumental) (SOC 27) is related to Film and Video Editors (SOC 27).
Yet, there is no direct link from that title to Musician. The KSA profile seems to flow in one direction.
Conclusion:
Everyone has an “X” factor. While the taxonomy is a valuable tool and I encourage everyone to use the ONET system, let’s recognize that creativity and imagination cannot be placed in a box.

Is there such a thing as a good fight? The willingness to embrace conflict and turn a bad fight into a good one is a hallmark of a great leader. And if you want to learn, there are steps you can take to help turn negative conflicts into creative opportunities.
1) Don’t Despair, Prepare!
First, and most importantly, know that sometimes it’s best to walk away from conflict. Know your ‘exit point’ -– the point at which it makes more sense to walk away from a conflict than it does to work to manage the issue. There are times that it will be your best option.
Everyone has their own style of dealing with conflict. Understand the different styles, identify yours and the styles of your team. Learn to appreciate the diverse styles of others, assume leadership when conflicts arise, and value the creative spark that conflicts can kindle.
2) Follow the Yellow Brick Road
What is your goal? If you can agree on a common goal – to creatively solve a problem, to generate a new idea or to sell more product -– you’ll have a better chance of harnessing the conflict. Sometimes the root of a conflict is that you don’t even agree on what the problem is -– or that you’re struggling to address different issues.
3) Reveal, Don’t Conceal
You must agree -– at least some extent -– to be vulnerable, to reveal why you want something, and to declare what’s really important to you about an issue. When we’re in conflict, we always have a story – usually one that justifies our proposed solution. Listen and try to understand the other person’s story. If the other person won’t reveal their needs or interests, ask open-ended questions and look for clues.
4) Tackle the Problem , Not the Person
Focus on the problem and persuade the other person to join you in solving the problem. Make the problem your common enemy rather than blaming the other person for causing the problem. Try and discourage conflicts from becoming personal.
5) Play Within Bounds
Sometimes conflicts are caused by process problems rather than substantive issues. If the other person remains difficult, start talking more about standards and procedures than about the problem. This can help you creatively manage a conflict that seems like an unmovable object.
6) Stir Up a Storm
Brainstorm — welcoming all suggestions — then sort through them all and determine which ones merit further study. Many of us fall in love with our solutions and decide that our idea is the only possibility. The best resolution for all concerned may not be the one we had previously discussed.
7) Take a Time Out
Classic advocates of creative conflict management have used this move throughout history. Martin Luther King Jr. suggested we “go to the mountain” during conflict to gain the higher ground and a better perspective on the problem. Gandhi retreated to meditation and fasting during the most intense periods of his struggle to free the Indian people. When things get heated or stalled consider taking a time out to regroup.
Talk Until You Drop
People don’t allow enough time for creative conflict management. In our modern, instantaneous world we have lost our patience. If you have decided the conflict is worth your time and energy, make sure you allow sufficient time for management. It usually takes longer than we think to produce good fights instead of bad ones.
9) Circle the Wagons
When you reach an agreement or a creative solution, you need to go through some sort of closure process. Arrange a time in the future to review how the solution is working. Agree upon an action plan to accomplish the goals of an agreement and decide who does what, when and where.
10) Write to Avoid New Fights
Write down what you think you’ve agreed upon at various stages. The process helps clarify your own thinking as well as the agreement. We all tend to assume the meaning we ascribe to a certain word or discussion is the same for everyone. This one act will save you a world of hurt down the road.
These ten steps can provide a roadmap to lead you skillfully through using conflict to generate creativity. While you may not need to use all ten for every situation, it’s good to review them before you try to resolve an issue. Then, you’ll be able to see where you’re stuck and what you need to do to move forward. For complex disputes, you may very well need to work your way through all the steps with all the parties.
